Just wanted to share about the transformation I’ve been going through for the past 10 months. To start off, this past year has NOT felt very glamorous for me. It’s been rewarding, but NOT glamorous haha. One of the biggest things I struggled with was realizing, then finally admitting, that working one-on-one with design clients doesn't play to my strengths. I wrestled REALLY long and hard with this because A) design has given me SO much - like feeling purposeful, independent and valued for the first time in my life; B) I love my clients to the moon and back - like actually really love them; and C) ...I didn’t know wtf else I was supposed to be doing. I really DID think that design and digging in deep with clients was what I was good at. It made me feel unsettled, like I had no direction.
--
Now, the major HIGHLIGHTS of this past year include joining @mariahpcoz in her year-long Accelerator Program. Mariah saw potential in me and my idea and it meant so much to me. The actual program has been life-changing on so many levels and I’ve learned a LOT about myself, marketing, selling, relationships and business-building. Through the program I built and launched a live program for web designers that I’m currently turning into a self-paced course. --
After the live program launched, I saw a real opportunity to build out a digital shop. I love creating digital content and already had Squarespace design kits and lots of freebies that I had created over the years, so I had a good sense of what people were interested in and needed. I’ve been working on this for MONTHS now and am trying to get through the last little push needed for launch. -- I think the biggest game changer for me has been prioritizing myself. I didn't see value in that until recently, and now I'm obsessed with loving myself haha. Entrepreneurship is the craziest, most rewarding adventure I've ever been on and I'm excited to have the vision and energy now to help YOU feel as happy and fulfilled, too 💗
Just wanted to say hi and share these flowers that I scanned earlier this month. They're from a kind of sad day that came out of nowhere, but it's a great reminder of what's actually important.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here's a short list of things that, turns out, are not all that important: - Working another hour when you've already worked 10
- The first point of your list actually starting on the correct line like you wanted (oh, Instagram)
- How many likes, shares, follows or subscribes you get
- The amount of things on your to-do list
- If your website actually gets launched on time (oops, really big personal one for me)
- How much money you make
- What you're wearing
- Where you travel
- What your house looks like
- Missing a workout
- Your partner doing that annoying (but innocent) thing again
- Posting to Instagram
- Posting about your life to anywhere
- Being noticed by someone you admire
- Getting the approval of others
- Proving your point to some dumb dumb on the internet
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Just to name a few.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Things are better now, and I'm totally good. But we lost a very sweet and important pet who really brought a lot of stability to our household, which sounds silly but her calmness is incredibly missed. These flowers were given to me by AJ on the day she died, but before we knew it was going to happen. I really love having a space where I can post these flowers and be honest and not perfect. Thank you Instagram family, I really do mean that.
You guyyyyyys. I’m relaunching my website NEXT WEEK and finishing up some big internal projects that are going to clear out some space to create new content + resources for MBD 🎉🎉🎉 I’m so ready to get back into blogging and creating regular guides and tutorials again (teaching is my favorite part of what I do). As a throwback, here’s a little guide I made about creating a color scheme for your business and website. In the post I walk you through color principles with LOTS of examples so you can learn how to harness the power of color for your brand. You’ll learn about color harmonies, common color associations, how to create a quick color scheme for your biz and a simple system for HOW to apply it on your site and social media. It’s a good one y’all! Head to the link in my profile and search for “ultimate color guide” to read the full post 🎨
Here are some moodboards I sent @katherinekemperbeauty today for the brand refresh we're working on right now! We worked together in early 2017 when Katherine was living in the Sanibel Island area and working with lots of laid back, beachy brides and clients. She's made a home in D.C. now so we're updating her brand and website to fit an edgier, bolder client who's more accustomed to city life than beach life 🌴 We've already nixed the blue moodboard because it's a little too close to her current branding, so it's a race between the other 2! What do you guys think? What are these saying to you?
It’s been important for me to go a little deeper on here and I know that sharing my struggles has been helpful for others, so here we go. More things I’ve kinda sucked at! 😘 Today is all about creativity + social media...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've been avoiding social media for the past 6 months. Over time I’ve realized it’s because of 3 reasons...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1) EVERYONE is an online expert now, and I don’t want to add to the noise without offering something unique or meaningful. I haven’t figured out how to be a part of this new era of the Internet in a way that feels good for me because...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2) My business has been changing and growing more quickly than I can handle (such a problem, I know 🙄). When I first started out I remember thinking that once you have clients and income there weren’t any more problems. But sometimes you get ALL the things you want and still end up feeling miserable and crazy. It’s confusing because you feel SO grateful and blessed but never actually experience fulfillment or peace.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3) And lastly, everything on social media feels the same to me. And again, I haven’t known how to contribute something new. At my core I NEED to feel innovative and creative. Like I need to make new things because life has less meaning and it feels more blah when you aren’t diving deep into yourself and figuring out a way to express it. I genuinely enjoyed getting to use social media as a way to express myself, and I’ve gotten really, really far away from that.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My solution to all of this is to try to stop giving a shit haha. I’m always in my head, so I’ve been trying to think less and just do. I’ve been so cognitive and haven’t trusted my gut and intuition as much, so I’ve been getting back to that. I talked a little bit about creating routine yesterday which has also been super helpful. I make sure to have time just for myself in the morning which is actually me FINALLY giving myself permission to wake up for myself instead of for my business or other people. It’s been really nice 🧡
